The Campaign for Northup Hall
For decades, Northup Library served as the intellectual heart of Linfield College. Now, after nearly 70 years, Northup's 25,000 square feet will be remodeled to provide new classrooms, labs and meeting spaces along with 30 offices for faculty and staff. The new Northup Hall will become an innovative academic "neighborhood," a place where the philosophical values of a liberal arts education merge with the practical applications of professional studies.
The new Northup will:
- Enhance curriculum and learning opportunities by co-locating the departments of business, economics, English and philosophy, along with the Writing Center and the Linfield Center for Regional Studies
- Feature a light tower, innovative classrooms and gathering places but maintain original design elements like arched windows and glass doors
- Provide state-of-the-art technology
- Be the first LEED-certified building on Linfield's campus, as part of Linfield's commitment to sustainability
Complete project description
What is the Linfield community saying about Northup Hall?
"A new Northup will become a symbol for the integration of experiential learning, liberal arts education and professional preparation that has long been a Linfield hallmark." -- Barbara Seidman, professor of English
"We will become more integrated and get to know our colleagues in other departments. I teach the history of economic thought, which includes many philosophical issues. There is no end to the connections we might make." -- Randy Grant, professor of economics
"Moving into a renewed and renovated Northup amounts to a kind of homecoming for the English Department. We remember the charms of the old library and look forward to a light and airy 21st century space -- one designed for the formal and informal conversations that deepen study of literature and that encourage our creative writing students." -- Lex Runciman, professor of English
"If our students are in demand, it may be because we're not a business college. We are an accounting program in a liberal arts college." -- Michael Jones, Harold C. Elkinton professor of accounting
