Out and About with President Thomas L. Hellie
Linfield President Thomas L. Hellie has spent his first seven weeks on the job learning about Linfield College and meeting with students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. Events have included a reception at the Oregon Historical Society, Partners-in-Progress reception, Tuition Free Day for students on campus and the annual Linfield Student Collaborative Research and Creative Projects Symposium.
Wine Tasting Event
Ever dreamed of blending your own bottle of wine? Now's your chance when you join members of Linfield's Alumni Leadership Council for an afternoon of wine tasting and conversation at Portland's Urban Wineworks. Join friends and classmates on Saturday, June 10 from 2-4 p.m. and you may even blend your won bottle of wine to take home.
Business Students Make It Big
Linfield College business students are selling shoes with stellar results. Under the guidance of Sandie Kiehl, associate professor of business, seniors in the strategic management class are running companies in an online computer simulation of an athletic shoe industry. Linfield student teams compete against 7,500 students from colleges and universities worldwide. On Linfield team earned a Global Top Twenty ranking seven times, while a second team earned the ranking twice.
Spring Break on the Gulf Coast
A group of Linfield College students came face to face with the devastation of Hurricane Katrina during spring break. Eighteen students and two advisors spent the week roofing new homes and mucking out old ones in Slidell, La., near New Orleans. The trip was part of the alternative spring break program offered by Habitat for Humanity. In addition to volunteering their time and energy, students raised money to supply their own construction materials for the week-long project. Some support for their trip was provided by Linfield Trustees and alumni.
Summer Reading: Mountains Beyond Mountains
Incoming students will get a head start on homework this year, even before setting foot on campus. New students are asked to read "Mountains Beyond Mountains" by Tracy Kidder over the summer and come to campus with a common experience. Want to join them? Visit the Linfield Bookstore.
Inside a Study Abroad Diary
Since Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has declared 2006 the Year of Study Abroad, it seems fitting to celebrate the travel experiences of our own Linfield students. View their award-winning photos, read their prized essays and peruse their diaries on the International Programs website.
Commencement Weekend Approaches
Kathie L. Olsen, deputy director and chief operating officer of the National Science Foundation, will present the 2006 commencement address Sunday, May 28 at 10 a.m. in the Linfield Oak Grove. Olsen will address 500 candidates for degrees -- 312 from McMinnville, 86 from the Portland Campus and 102 from the Adult Degree Program. The Rev. Kent Harrop, pastor of the First Baptist Church in McMinnville, will present the address at baccalaureate services on Saturday, May 27, at 6 p.m. in the Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
Homecoming is Coming
Linfield's homecoming festivities will have a new look this year. Make plans to join friends, classmates and beloved professors for a weekend of activities Sept. 29-30. Treat yourself to an evening of Linfield's finest on Friday, Sept. 29, at McMinnville's Grand Ballroom with opportunities to bid at a silent auction, celebrate success with alumni awards, and meet Thomas L. Hellie, Linfield's president. On Saturday, take in a family barbecue before the football game and join reunion classes and others for dinner at the Grand Ballroom.
Two More Students Receive Fulbrights
Two Linfield College seniors will spend next year teaching in other countries after earning awards from the Fulbright Commission. Twelve Linfield students have won Fulbright awards since 1999. Learn more about the two latest students to receive Fulbrights at our website.
Calling All Graphic Artists
Graphic artists are invited to submit designs for the college's Sesquicentennial Logo. On Jan. 30, 2008, the college will celebrate its sesquicentennial, the 150th anniversary of its chartering. As part of the celebration, the college is seeking designs for a logo to commemorate the celebration.
Softball Heads to NCAA D3 World Series
With its back against the wall in the NCAA Division III West Region tournament, Linfield beat La Verne twice, 12-9 and 1-0, to clinch the regional title on Mother's Day at the University of Redlands' Field of Dreams. For the first time in the program's history, Linfield (35-9) advances to compete in the eight-team Division III championship finals, hosted by Peace College. The national championship tournament is scheduled for May 18-22 at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh, N.C.
