January 2007
Hi, Linfield alum!
Happy New Year from those of us at Linfield! Welcome to the E-CAT, an electronic newsletter connecting Linfield alumni with each other and the institution. For easy reading, we have kept it short and simple with links to additional information.
I hope you will resolve to visit campus this year and to support the students at your alma mater by contributing to scholarships or the Linfield Fund for Excellence, by offering internships or career advice and by volunteering to serve on an advisory board or reunion committee.
May 2007 be the best year yet!

Save the Date for Homecoming
Start planning now for Homecoming October 19-20. Join classmates and friends for a weekend to revive memories, rekindle friendships and reflect on campus growth. Visit our website for information on reunions, lodging, and schedule. While you're at it, take a look at photos from Homecoming 2006. Last year, several prestigious alumni received awards.
Discover Tuscany
Linfield alumni can explore the rich history of Rome and Tuscany during an 11-day guided tour to one of the most famous regions of the world. Linfield has partnered with Collette Travel to offer a trip that includes visits to Rome, Florence, Assisi, Pisa and Siena. Experience fabulous scenery, food, art and wine.
"Educating Global Citizens" is Theme of Inaugural Celebration
"Educating Global Citizens" will be the theme of the inauguration of Thomas L. Hellie as the 19th president of Linfield College. A weeklong series of events from February 23 through March 2 will focus on topics such as preparing students for a global society, international life at Linfield, and global health and global warming issues. Tracy Kidder, author of "Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, the Man Who Would Cure the World" will discuss his book Thursday, march 1. The installation ceremony will be held Friday, March 2 at 3 p.m. in the Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
Mark Your Calendars
In the coming months Linfield alumni around the country will have the opportunity to meet Linfield's newest president, learn the news about Linfield and network with classmates and host alumni gatherings in New York, D.C., Southern California and Hawaii.
Student Spend January Term Abroad
For many Linfield College students, January means international exploration. More than 200 students are studying in the U.S. and abroad through Linfield's January Term Program. Some 20 courses are offered each January in locations around the world, challenging students to look beyond their hometown and country to understand world issues and appreciate the differences that make all cultures and individuals unique.
Wildcat Football Team Sponsors Helmets for Hunger
Linfield College football players leveled a hit toward local hunger during Helmets for Hunger, a Linfield philanthropy program to benefit families in need. Wildcats filled shopping carts with Thanksgiving staples and other day-to-day items at Roth's IGA in November. They collected more than $600 and received an additional $400 from Roth's to aid to local families. The program was started in 2002 by the Linfield football team, who hope to challenge other football teams in the Northwest to participate.
Storm Downs Trees on Campus
A major windstorm on December 14 sent 25 trees crashing down on the Linfield College campus, including one that struck the president's house. The storm -- the worst windstorm to hit Oregon in a decade -- also damaged several roofs, blew off siding and broke several soccer poles and baseball foul nets, as well as damaged the cupola on Pioneer Hall. No injuries were reported on campus, but power outages forced a number of classes to move final examinations to different locations.
Where Are They Now?
Habitat for Humanity and a number of theaters have benefited from the energy and enthusiasm of two former Linfield College faculty members. Since their retirements, Jim Duke, professor emeritus of psychology and Tom Gressler, professor emeritus of theatre arts, are spending their time doing the things they love most.
French Orchestra to Perform at Linfield
Local residents will have a unique opportunity to attend a performance by L'Orchestre de Chambre Francais, with Brian Suits, conductor, and featuring violinist Kyung Sun Lee, Saturday, March 17 at 8 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium at Linfield College. Acclaimed as one of France's best chamber orchestras, L'Orchestre de Chambre Francais is the resident orchestra of the 18th century Theatre Imperial in Compiege near Paris.
