Hellie Inaugurated as the 19th President
Led by international students carrying 22 flags from around the world, nearly 200 faculty, staff and delegates participated in the formal installation ceremony on Friday, March 2 in the Ted Wilson Gymnasium. It was the culmination of a week-long series of events under the theme "Educating Global Citizens." Activities included panel discussions by leading authorities on global health and global warming and former Linfield Fulbright scholars discussing their experiences working and studying abroad. In addition, a Czech professor and author presented a lecture on preparing students for a global arena and Pulitzer Prizewinning author Tracy Kidder discussed his book :Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, the Man Who Would Cure the World." International life at Linfield was celebrated with an Asian music concert and an evening of entertainment and performances by international students.
Alumni Award Nominations Sought
Do you know a Linfield alumnus who has made outstanding contributions to the world? His community? Her career? Can you think of alumni or others who have made a positive impact on the college through their service to the institution? Don't let those people go unrecognized. At Homecoming, the Alumni Association will pay tribute to several outstanding individuals. Take this opportunity to tell us about someone who is worthy of one of the awards including the Outstanding Young Alumnus, Alumni Service Award, Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Walker Service Award, given to a non-alumnus.
All the World's a Stage
Spend three summer nights in charming Ashland with other Linfield alumni and friends at the Oregon Shakespeare festival August 9-12. The Linfield group will see five plays including works by Shakespeare, Moliere and Tom Stoppard. Pre-show talks given by English professor and Shakespearean scholar Ken Ericksen will enhance the experience. To learn more about this trip, visit our website.
Celebrating More Than 50 Years?
If you graduated or left Linfield 50 years ago or more, you are a member of our 50-year club. That group meets annually to remember the past, share stories from the present and learn more about Linfield's future. This year's gathering will be held on Tuesday, May 1 at Linfield and will give attendees the opportunity to welcome the club's newest members from the class of 1957.
Carnahan in Final Season
Scott Carnahan '73, who will retire as head baseball coach this year, will be honored on April 29 at the final home baseball game of the year. Scott Brosius '02 will succeed Carnahan as head coach. Carnahan will remain Linfield's director of athletics after stepping down from the coaching position he has had since 1984. During his tenure, Carnahan's teams have won 11 NWC championships and finished as runner-up on six other occasions. He has also been named NWC Coach of the Year three times.
Share Your Linfield Memories
Next year marks Linfield's 150th anniversary. In light of this milestone, the college is compiling information that will help preserve the rich history of those first 150 years. Over the next few issues, you will be asked to share your best Linfield memories. Want to tell us about a much-loved professor or mentor? Can you remember a course that changed your way of thinking or your career path? Share those tidbits with others.
Upcoming Portland Area Events
Alumni in the greater Portland area are invited to two upcoming events. Those wishing to learn more about buying and selling real estate can hear from a panel of alumni who work in the field. They will talk about trends in the market and what to consider when buying a home. They will also answer questions. The event will take place the evening of March 20 on the Portland campus. Want to try the latest craze in networking? Join other Linfield alumni for speed networking April 17. Find a potential employer or employee, meet a mentor, make a career connection, and enhance your business all in a matter of minutes.
