Your gifts at work

Study abroad
Gifts helped prepare over 300 Linfield students who studied abroad last year for what they would experience outside of the United States.

"It is a cliche, but it is so true: studying abroad changes your life.  It shook me to the core, in a good way, flipped my world upside down and I see the world and those living in it in a completely different way.  It is because of my study abroad experience I applied for the JET program and will be teaching English in Kyoto, Japan.  Right now, I really feel like the world is my oyster."

Research opportunities
Giving in support of collaborative research allowed Evan '06 (Biology), along with Taylor '06 and David '07 to work with Professors Michael Roberts and Jennifer Nordstrom to conduct continual research surrounding epithelial tissue and the applications in the human body.  Findings could provide information about how to access the inside of organs with similar tissue and lead to better treatments for diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis.

"This project has been a blast to work on due to the challenges of combining biology, electrochemistry and physics.  It has made me seriously consider a career in biomedical research, inspiring me to go to graduate school in the biological sciences.  It lead me into applying for and receiving the Linfield Murdock Fellowship, where I worked on a biomedical research project at OHSU last summer."

Helping others
Gifts from alumni and others gave 18 Linfield students an opportunity to travel to Louisiana during their spring break and learn how volunteering can make a difference in the lives of people who have been affected by a natural disaster.

"On April 2, 2006 we flew home from New Orleans: I felt nervous and thrilled.  I was also worried that I would not be able to accurately convey the impact of what I had seen and the moments I shared.  Whether or not I can describe to anyone the impact of New Orleans I will remember those moments forever.  Oceans of gratitude to the people of New Orleans for opening their hearts to us, the individuals who shared this journal and those at home who kept us in their thoughts."
